Lorraine Respress Hudgins, R.N., of Mathews, died peacefully at home with her son at her side following a short illness on Tuesday, June 28, 2011.
She was born in Norfolk, Va., on March 28, 1928 to Ellis Respress and his wife Thelma Armistead Respress. She was predeceased by her parents and her husband, George Vernon Hudgins Jr.
Survivors are her son, David Bland Hudgins and his wife Joni of Williamsburg, Va.; brother, Ray Respress and wife Gloria of Grafton, Va., and sister, Betty Respress of Mathews.
She was a graduate of Stuart Circle Hospital, Richmond, Va., and served for 30 years as the first Public Health Nurse of Mathews County and continued her professional career as a consultant for the State Division of Medical and Nursing Facilities. She continued her professional endeavors and was commissioned for her expertise in home health and wrote the Manual for Licensure and Certification for participation in Medicare programs.
She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and a member for over 50 years of the Oriental Chapter of Eastern Star Number 30. She was a member of the Mathews Art Group. She enjoyed painting, traveling, gardening and walking her dogs on the beach.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2011, at Foster- Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews. The family will receive friends and relatives from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 30, 2011, at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Friendship Cemetery immediately following the funeral. The family will receive friends and relatives at Macedonia Baptist Church following the interment.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Mathews Rescue Squad, Shriners Hospitals for Children and American Cancer Society.
