Lois Elaine Layman born Dec. 3, 1936 of Lisbon, North Dakota, died peacefully Sept. 13, 2013.
Lois is survived by her three daughters and their family, Shelley D. Zabel, Clifton R. Zabel of Mathews, Dolores and Stephen Clayton, and Vicky and Leon Combs, who reside in Hampton, Va. Lois leaves behind nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; her brother and sister-in-law, Darrell and Peg Woloch; sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Bill Bommersbach and sister, Carol Jean Woloch, and their families along with many friends were very dear to her heart.
Her husband of 32 years, Norman W. Layman; her mother, Emma Woloch, and her brother, Dennis Woloch preceded her in death.
Lois was a devoted Army wife and mother. Her family moved from Kansas to Alaska and then moved to Virginia in 1963. She and her family moved to Mathews County in 1971 and she called this home.
When her husband retired from the Army in 1978 they were the first managers of the 7-Eleven store when it opened in Mathews County. Lois loved people and after her husband passed in 1989 she worked at North Star Market for close to 20 years. She always had a smile for everyone. She loved playing cards with her friends and spent many cherished moments with her grandchildren teaching them how to play different card games.
Lois was a devoted member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary Post 83 in Mathews for more than 30 years. She loved helping with the breakfast once a month and all the laughter that came from being with her friends and neighbors in the county.
There will be a Celebration of Life service Oct. 6, 2013 at the American Legion in Mathews County at 3 p.m.
