A sea of people dressed in purple descended upon Gloucester Court House on Saturday morning with a single goal in mind—putting an end to a terrible, deadly disease that touches almost every family.
The 2024 Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck Walk to End Alzheimer’s started at Botetourt Elementary School, with walkers making their way up and down Main Street in part of the world’s largest fundraiser to fight the disease.
Looking out at the “sea of purple,” Barbara Monteith, Senior Development Manager at the Alzheimer’s Association Southeastern Virginia Chapter told the crowd “I’m full of hope”—hope for a world where Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia are easily treatable and eventually cured.
“Because you walk, we’re making history,” Monteith said. At present, she said, there are three FDA-approved treatments, with many more in the pipeline.
