Local law enforcement to take part in Saturation Saturday

The Mathews County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police are among 31 Virginia agencies partnering with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to intensify driving enforcement prior to the Labor Day weekend, including with sobriety checkpoints and increased DUI patrols scheduled for Saturation Saturday, Aug. 24.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, sobriety checkpoints reduce drunk driving deaths by up to 20 percent, said a press release from MADD.
“Police officers are often our first line of defense against impaired driving,” said MADD CEO Stacey D. Stewart. “On Saturation Saturday and every day, MADD is committed to supporting equitable and just enforcement efforts to stop this 100 percent preventable crime.”
MADD’s regional executive director for the mid-Atlantic, Bryna Clark-Braverman, said that Saturation Saturday is “an opportunity to team up with law enforcement and amplify the message that if you choose to drive impaired, you will get caught.” She urg...
