Local cancer survivor inspires blogger

A chance encounter with a local woman undergoing cancer treatment provided inspiration for blogger Kat Van Fossen on a recent trip to the Yorktown beach.
Bonnie Hudgins Sandahl, who just turned 40, said she was diagnosed with breast cancer on Nov. 7, 2016 and since then has been taking chemotherapy treatments, losing her hair but not her spirit.
Sandahl is the daughter of Kay Hogge of Gloucester and the late Darden Hudgins of Mathews. She, her husband Craig, and three teenage children live in the James Store area. Her husband, she said, has helped keep her strong; and her strength was very much on display the day she and Van Fossen met on the beach. The blogger’s reaction, she said, took her aback because “I honestly forget I don’t have hair.”
