Lillian Neal Wayne, 96, of Hayes, Virginia, died on Aug. 19, 2023.

She worked as a secretary in Washington, D.C., during World War II; advanced to working for generals in the Marine Corps and later for the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs and the U.S. Department of Interior. She retired in 1991 from Basic Construction Company of Newport News, Va., after 23 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Grover and Genevieve Bryson Neal; her brothers, Bryson Neal, Sandige Neal and John Jake Neal; sisters, Mary Hicks and Helen Johnson, and daughter, Vivian Topping.

Survivors include a daughter, Teresa Wayne Hornbuckle; four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

The family received friends on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2023, at Hogg Funeral Home from 10:30-11:30 a.m., followed by a graveside service at Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery at noon, conducted by Pastor Robbie Brunjes.

Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point, was in charge.
