In spite of weather interruptions, renovations to New Point Comfort Lighthouse are continuing. Mathews County Planning and Zoning Director Thomas Jenkins visited the site last Thursday to review an application for a scheduled payment to contractor First Class Contracting and snapped this photo of the lighthouse, with the scaffolding reaching well above the structure. The lantern room is on the ground, dismantled and ready for restoration. According to the project website, paint removal has been completed on 30 percent of the exterior and has begun on the interior. In addition, grinding out of the interior joints is underway and the brick walls interior have been dismantled. Jenkins said if the contractor can work 50 percent of the days in January and February, the project should be finished by the spring.
