Lighthouse keepers to be honored in Mathews ceremonies

The U.S. Lighthouse Society, Chesapeake Chapter, will honor seven Chesapeake Bay lighthouse keepers in ceremonies on Saturday, Oct. 3, at three cemeteries in Mathews County. The public is invited. The event will be held rain or shine.
The first 30-minute ceremony will be a tribute to Keeper Walter M. Shawn at 9:30 a.m. at the Trinity Church Cemetery at the intersection of Route 14 and Ridge Road in Foster. This will be followed at 11:15 a.m. by a tribute to Keeper Henry Luther Dow at the St. Paul United Methodist Church Cemetery, 5555 New Point Comfort Highway, Susan.
After a break for lunch, five keepers will be honored beginning at 1 p.m. at the H.C. Smither Memorial Cemetery on Smithers Lane off Buckley Hall Road at Hudgins. Lighthouse Service plaques will be dedicated, in order, at the grave sites of Keepers James Garnett Williams at 1:30 p.m., William Thomas Brooks at 2:15 p.m., Robert Harold Matthews at 3:30 p.m., and Andrew Broaddus Sadler and Charles Franklin Sadler at 4:15 p.m...
