Mathews Memorial Library’s Soothin’ Summer Sounds concert series returns for its 15th season this summer, with the first concert, by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra’s Woodwind Quintet, to be held at 7 p.m. next Thursday, June 15 at the library. It is free and open to the public.
Selections to be performed include compositions by Brahms, Mozart, and Haydn, as well as American composers Scott Joplin and William Grant Still, said a press release.
Members of the quintet are Debra Cross, flute; Andrew Leoboldt, oboe; Michael Byerly, clarinet; Laura Leisring, bassoon; and Hirofumi Tanaka, French horn.
“Plunky & Oneness,” led by American jazz saxophonist and songwriter James “Plunky” Branch, will perform on July 13, followed on Aug. 31 by the Ambrosia Quartet to round out the season with a lively variety of musical styles and periods.The series is sponsored by Friends of the Mathews Memorial Library.
