Letter: Who knew?

Editor, Gazette-Journal:
Did you know that U.S. Presidents and their appointees have not had access to the federal government’s payment system since 1946?
A Feb. 10 New York Times article, authored by five Democratic former Treasury Department secretaries, reported that since the Truman administration, “a very small group of nonpartisan career civil servants,” following “rigorous ethics rules,” managed the nation’s payment system.
Stated another way (without the Washington speak), this small group of career bureaucrats manages multiple trillions of dollars coming and going without oversight from anyone the voters have elected. Apparently, this has continued for eight decades.
The Democrats and legacy press went wild when Elon Musk gained access to the Treasury Department’s payment system. Never mind that Musk and President Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) could not change anything. They could only look at what was going on. What they found is outrageous. For example:
