Letter: What are these people thinking?

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

The Piankatank Community League’s semi-annual road cleanup in the Harcum area resulted in the collection of 10 large bags of trash. One of the volunteers remarked that "it will really look nice for a couple of days."

The comment got me wondering: What do people think of when they drive down the road and toss bottles and cans and fast-food containers out the car window?

Do they care it is not their neighborhood, or that someone will plow through the ditches and pick up their trash? I was thinking of recommending that people carry a litter bag in their car and dump the bag in their own trash cans, but I realized that we pick up as many plastic bags filled with fast-food trash as anything else, so that wouldn’t work. I think the solution is for these people to volunteer for our next road cleanup in six months’ time. We hope to see you all there, and thanks to all the volunteers who helped us last Saturday.
