Editor, Gazette-Journal:
This past week, family and friends from far and wide said goodbye to a true blue, much-loved Southern girl from Mathews.
Mary Wade Smith showed all of us what loyalty, kindness, consideration, love and friendship meant. I loved her engaging way of saying “Hey Girl” when I called her on the phone. She quietly showed her charming personality in her everyday life.
She and her husband Billy loved being friends with everyone at the Mathews Yacht Club. She worked at the Gazette-Journal years ago and she also worked at the General Assembly in Richmond. She always did her part to participate in her church, clubs, organizations and everyday life. She did it all with grace, style and confidence.
She had a unique way of making us all feel special and important. I will miss her.
What a girl.
P.S. My heartfelt thanks to Binkie and Robert Farmer for all their care and devotion for her. She felt their love and for that I’m eternally grateful.
