Editor, Gazette-Journal:
I purchased a house in Mathews, Virginia, back in 1990. Since that time, over the years the editorial pages have had letters expressing a view not very complimentary to weekenders, come-heres, or second home owners.
The latest I’ve seen was in Feb. 17 by Ms. Bowman. She states that second home owners do not pay taxes to Mathews. How absurd is that? She goes on to say we spend little if any money in Mathews. She is either woefully misinformed or just doesn’t understand.
Since 1990, I’ve paid a considerable amount of real estate taxes on my one-acre waterfront home to Mathews, Virginia. Since 1994, I’ve paid personal property taxes on a boat, motor and trailer to the county. My money is being used for everything the county sees fit, including Mathews Public Schools of which I’ve had no child to attend.
As far as not spending money, tell that to M&M Building Supply, Tatterson’s Nursery, Woodstock Garage, Best Value...
