Letter: Voter suppression

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act is an illegal attempt to suppress Americans’ votes, which is a core democratic value. It was co-sponsored by Rep. Rob Wittman (202-225-4261) under the guise of unauthorized individuals voting, which has been proven to be less than 2 percent, and measures are already in place to prevent voter fraud.
Everything about this law takes Americans back to the 1950s and ’60s. Those who voted for Wittman, is this what you really wanted? Women who have had their names changed due to marriage, marginal groups and black people will have to jump through one hurdle after another just to be allowed to vote.
Marginal groups and people of color have suffered a long history of voter suppression from paying poll taxes to having to recite the Constitution. People have been lynched, beaten and died simply trying to vote.
This act is a sheer manipulation of the American process and the American people.
