The 2023-2024 school year is just around the corner and the need for excellent role models in the form of school volunteers is great in our local public schools. Dr. Mari Gibbs, current Mathews County School Board member and avid school volunteer, learned of this need from school principals and took personal action to become a volunteer. Now, Dr. Gibbs is striving to increase school volunteerism by establishing the Power Hour Challenge in Mathews County.
Dr. Gibbs’s Power Hour Challenge encourages all citizens to become approved school volunteers and spend just one hour per week volunteering in Mathews schools. Just one hour a week; surely, we all have one hour a week to dedicate to our schools and students. Some volunteer opportunities may include: greeting students in the morning, tutoring, being a “lunch buddy,” wrapping books in the library, working in the cafeteria, taking tickets at an athletic event, and more.
