Editor, Gazette-Journal:
At the last Mathews Board of Supervisors’ meeting, a resolution was introduced and passed by a 3-2 vote. This resolution requested more information on the authenticity of the marker’s inscription [the highway marker recognizing the 20th century exodus of black residents from Gwynn’s Island].
My question is why? Why wouldn’t every member of the BOS want to know if this marker’s statement is fact or fiction? Why would anyone want to advertise this information when there is a strong possibility that it is hearsay?
This marker definitely puts a stigma on Gwynn’s Island and Mathews County. The NAACP is the only sponsor of this marker, and I am told that they brought someone in from California to do the research.
I personally would like to see the research; why doesn’t all of our BOS? I cannot understand why all of the BOS and the County Administrator wouldn’t want to know whether this marker’s inscription is fact or fiction. There is a book written by John W. Dixon,...
