In this time of governmental change, it’s the loss of ideals that hits me hardest. Our government was built on ideals expressed in the Constitution, and I was taught that if we followed its precepts, we could eventually attain a more perfect union.
But the administration is not following those precepts, and we are seeing government-sanctioned cruelty. Programs that save lives are abruptly cut off. People are fired without notice or reason, or sentenced to cruel and unusual punishment, or detained or deported with no warning, no means of contact, no access to the Constitution that might find them innocent.
The Constitution still exists, and teachers like me are still teaching it. But how are we supposed to teach Rule of Law when the president ignores court orders? Or the Bill of Rights, which applies to all people, when the president deports people without due process and sends them to a prison notorious for human rights abuses?
