Editor, Gazette-Journal:
I am supporting for reelection our sheriff, Danny Howlett. I believe our solved crime rate has remained one of the highest in the state under Sheriff Howlett. I have, over the years, been impressed with his (and his staff’s) courtesy: whether on the street, in their office or on the phone—non-emergency (thank goodness). I was impressed that we got several warning and later informational calls during the recent hurricane, even one to correct an incorrect phone number. I’m sure these were helpful to most of our citizens throughout the county.
After the hurricane, I called to thank Sheriff Howlett for these helpful calls and was impressed to learn that I was the first to do that! Two days later, I received a personal call thanking me for my call! Only in Mathews! By the way, did you know that it was the sheriff that arranged for the water and ice being handed out after Irene?
