Letter: Remembering a true philanthropist

Editor, Gazette-Journal:
In this season of giving and being thankful, I wanted to take the opportunity to remember and express my gratitude for the life of William Simmons Sr.
For many years Mr. Simmons served as the president of Hands Across Mathews. Mr. Simmons lived and illustrated the true meaning and essence of philanthropy. Mr. Simmons had a heart for all people of Mathews County.
As I think about William Simmons Sr. and his acts of service to all the residents of Mathews County, I am reminded of a quote by Albert Schweitzer, “The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others.”
This is the legacy that William Simmons Sr. left to all of us. May we never forget William Simmons and continue to carry out his legacy. With a grateful and thankful heart.
