Editor, Gazette-Journal:
To address two letters from the latest Gazette-Journal, from Sharon Dequaine and Theresa Goltermann. Both letters are critical of Elon Musk and his DOGE work in cutting waste in government. While Ms. Dequaine is correct that we have the General Accounting Office to monitor spending, what she fails to mention is that if the GAO were doing its job, DOGE would not be required.
Congress has abdicated its responsibility by allowing unelected bureaucrats to legislate from their offices, control our everyday lives, and spend money without oversight. When was the last time you heard that Congress was cancelling any funding due to wasteful spending/hiring? Almost 40 percent of all workers in this country work for the government in some form. Ridiculous.
