I am writing to highlight an important issue that concerns the youth of Gloucester and the need for positive engagement opportunities within our community. While I acknowledge that the Sheriff’s Office has exhibited commendable patience and de-escalation skills when interacting with young individuals, I believe there is room for policy changes to address the concerns and complaints that have been raised.
Two recurring grievances I often hear are the removal of young people from Main Street for loitering and riding skateboards and their expulsion from parking lots during Friday and Saturday night gatherings where they showcase their cars and socialize. These events provide an avenue for interaction and allow young individuals to express themselves and impress their peers. However, the lack of designated spaces for such activities leaves them feeling displaced and without a sense of belonging.
