As a concerned citizen and resident of Gloucester, I am writing to express my apprehensions regarding the upcoming unopposed election for the position of Gloucester Sheriff. While our community is generally safe, and the sheriff’s office has done a commendable job in protecting us against violence, I believe there is room for improvement to make Gloucester an even safer place for its citizens and taxpayers.
One of the key areas that requires attention is the focus on property crime. I strongly disagree with the Gloucester Sheriff’s stance that property crime is merely an insurance problem, not a crime worth investigating. It is disheartening to learn that in many instances, the Gloucester Sheriff’s Office opts to handle property theft reports over the phone instead of actively responding to the scene. This approach undermines the sense of security we expect from our law enforcement and fails to address the concerns of victims.
