I am afraid. Not for me personally but for our republic. I have voted in presidential elections for more than 65 years and, for the first time, I am afraid. Donald Trump, the leading contender for the Republican nomination, has promised a full pardon and federal apology for many of those convicted in the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. He has also hinted that he may be able to pardon himself if convicted of the many federal crimes for which he has been indicted.
He has recently proposed the expansion of detention camps for millions of undocumented migrants prior to their deportation. These would be operated by the military. This is similar to the concentration camps created by the Nazis prior to World War II. Could these also be used to house those people who oppose his methods? Do we really want to go there? I sure hope not but I am afraid.
