Editor, Gazette-Journal:On Nov. 4, 1979, 53 Americans were captured in the U.S. Embassy at Tehran, Iran, and held hostage until Jan. 20, 1981—444 days. Their release, the short version; occurred after a newly elected American president threatened fire and brimstone if the hostages were not released.On Oct. 7, 2023, 12 U.S. citizens were captured with the 254 hostages Hamas took back to Gaza from Israel after they murdered 1,200 others.After a year, the plight of these citizens of the so-called greatest and most powerful nation on earth … are still captive. Their plight is barely registered in the public consciousness, certainly not on broadcast news. I recall that the days were numbered each night during the Iranian Hostage crisis, when was the last time you heard anything about them on the news or from the White House or Congress? It seems that what is more important are calls for cease fires, campus protests in favor of Hamas; our hostages are an afterthought.Seven are still held, so...
