Editor, Gazette-Journal:
We have known Robert "JJ" Orth since the early 1970s when he and we were members of the Abingdon Volunteer Rescue Squad. We were impressed with his intelligence, energy and dedication. We noticed the high regard other VIMS/AVRS volunteers had for his work habits and professional accomplishments. He is internationally known for his studies of and advocacy for SAV (underwater grasses) which are so vital to the marine life of the Bay and its tributaries.
We have observed his life as a member of Bethany UMC and enjoyed teaching his two daughters in Sunday school. We are impressed, but not surprised, by the many activities he has pursued, such as leading Gloucester High School Athletic Boosters for many years and his major contributions in the planning and completion of the track and football stadium at GHS.
He is a friendly, caring and competent person and would be a great asset to the Gloucester BOS.
