Editor, Gazette-Journal:In the end, politicians are measured in two ways: the ideas they represent and their ability to effectuate those ideas.Rob Wittman is by all accounts a smart, educated man with a pleasing demeanor. But he passes neither the idea nor the effectiveness test.His ideas are to be found in the extreme right corners of Congress, far from the aisle where the real decisions are made. When Donald Trump was president, Wittman voted with him on nearly every issue. He has waffled on the January 6 controversy and the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election, refusing to condemn Trump for his dangerously anti-constitutional views.Like Trump, he opposes a woman’s right to choose. He voted against the common-sense infrastructure bill that has brought many improvements to our area and helped the economy recover after the Covid crisis.These marginalized positions should be enough to threaten the reelection of even the most effective politician.
