Letter: Lions support the community

Editor, Gazette-Journal:
“We Serve” is the mission of Lions Club International. Over the past 65 years, this is what the Lions in Mathews have been exceptional at accomplishing.
Just this past year, the Mathews County Lions Club has raised funds to contribute to many causes and needs in our small community, e.g., Mathews Schools (including Teachers of the Year), National Night Out, Dolly Parton Imagination Library, and the annual Triad (cooperative effort of law enforcement and seniors to educate seniors and reduce crime).
Annually, this club supports two college-bound Mathews High School students through scholarships. These efforts are in addition to the ongoing recycling of glasses and hearing aids from the greater Middle Peninsula community. Just this year we were able to assist a Mathews woman with a refurbished hearing aid. Prior to her receiving this hearing aid she would not leave her home, because she could not hear. Now she looks forward to going out in the community.
