Letter: Jesus is the Reason

Editor, Gazette-Journal:
If you shop for Christmas decorations in most stores, you’ll find that about 95 percent of the items have nothing to do with Jesus Christ. Over the years, the emphasis has shifted to Santa, presents, decorated trees, reindeer, etc. I wouldn’t be surprised if some children grow up thinking Christmas was Santa’s birthday.
Newington Baptist Church is trying to encourage people to remember that Christmas is the celebration of Jesus’s birth, and “Jesus is the reason for the season.” We have a ministry of acquiring nativity sets throughout the year from thrift stores, yard sales, donations, etc. Around late November, we mostly give them to the members of our congregation who may not have one or who knows someone who needs one.
We collect all sizes and shapes and let the people select the ones they want. We even give small sets to small children (with their parent’s permission). You can’t start too young to teach about Jesus.
