Volunteer firefighters have been around in America since Benjamin Franklin founded the first fire company in 1736. Communities such as Gloucester depend on our neighbors to fill the positions of volunteer firefighters.
Yes, it does take time away from families and enjoying special times. However, when you have just sat down to eat dinner and the tones go off, you know a neighbor needs help.
It could be something as small as a child with a scraped knee, or as serious as a devastating structure fire or an accident with fatalities.
Yes, you will see your neighbors in the best of times and the worst of times.
Yes, it is a lot to ask of an individual, but knowing the residents of your community appreciate you being there to help carry their burdens means a lot.
