Letter: Historical society willing to take monument

The following is an open letter to the Mathews County Board of Supervisors:
The Mathews County Historical Society board members adamantly believe that the county’s historic courthouse green should not be subdivided. It is public property that contains historic structures of local, regional and national significance.
We also are aware that certain individuals favor deeding a portion of the courthouse green to a newly formed organization about which very little is known. For that reason, if the board decides to deed a portion of the historic courthouse green to a private entity or nonprofit organization, the Mathews County Historical Society is offering to accept it.
The Mathews County Historical Society, which has been in existence since 1964, has served as an advocate in the preservation of Mathews County’s historic properties and it fosters heritage tourism, an important component of the local economy.
