It was my pleasure to become acquainted with Jack Gill when I practiced law in Mathews. He is a man of impeccable integrity and a passionate prosecutor who cares deeply about preserving his community from the corrosive effects of lawlessness.
Jack has served Mathews in a way that has been sensible, economical and effective. For example, he joined law enforcement professionals of neighboring counties in a combined effort to convict drug suppliers. This has been largely successful. After a conviction, judges seldom ignore state sentencing guidelines, but Jack has convinced them to incarcerate many drug offenders under the Commonwealth’s Detention and Diversion programs, while giving longer suspended sentences.
What this means is that the Commonwealth pays the entire cost of incarceration, whereas the County would pay if the offender were sent to the regional jail. What this also means is that the local probation office monitors the offender after re...
