Letter: Effective leadership

Editor, Gazette-Journal:Today’s challenges have no easy fixes. Our safety and well-being depend on people in and out of government studying, cooperating to align laws and funding to build a livable future. The Affordable Care Act, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and the CHIPS Act were the products of effective leadership.Donald Trump does not excel at this kind of work. Faced with a pandemic in 2020, he offered dangerous quack remedies, but no effective response. As emigration surged worldwide, he began to build the very symbol of human foolishness—a wall—and encouraged us to hate and fear immigrants. To protect American business, he used high tariffs that hurt farmers and consumers. In this election season, amid horrific storms, fires and heat, he’s creating suspicion and hostility toward FEMA.On one side of Church Street, we have a school sign encouraging children to “Be a Buddy, Not a Bully.” On the other, we have Trump.Don’t let Trump build fear and resentment.
