Editor, Gazette-Journal:
This is being written in response to the letter "County obliged to return DMV funds to offices" in the Sept. 8 issue of the Gazette-Journal. Having worked with the DMV Select office as Mathews County’s former chief deputy treasurer, I fully agree and support the Attorney General’s advisory opinion stating that the board of supervisors is required to appropriate to the Constitutional offices 80 percent of the DMV fees remitted to the county each month.
When I worked in the treasurer’s office, the employees were paid for the DMV services that were rendered. However, it appears to me that the 80 percent of DMV funds received from the state are now being misappropriated into the county’s general fund. I would like to know the board of supervisors’ grounds for the diversion of these funds since 2009.
