Concerning last week’s letter to the editor, “promote the general welfare,” I am glad to see mention of God, the source of all wisdom. However, I would caution that “… the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness” I Cor. 3:19.
It is misleading to hail the common good over individual rights. In fact, collectivism is at the root of fascism, socialism and communism. “The common good before the individual good,” said Adolf Hitler, a famous collectivist. The foundation of the Constitution is found in Biblical principles which the founders accepted as truth and applied to our government.
Rather than hide words, the sign quote from the Constitution should be so familiar to Mathews’ citizens, that the ellipses prompt us to recite the Preamble.
