Letter: Barrack to retire as sheriff

Editor, Gazette-Journal:
It’s been an honor and a privilege to be the Sheriff of Mathews County since 2012 and being a career law officer starting when I was 19 years old. It comes time when events and winds of change push us in a different direction. I am announcing my retirement effective Dec. 31, 2023.
There are many I would like to acknowledge. I am thankful and most humbled by all the support the sheriff’s office and I have received over the years from our citizens. I appreciate the present and past board of supervisors and county administrators for working to meet the needs of this office for today and beyond. There are many law enforcement professionals who have helped and continue to support my office to whom I will always be indebted. Finally, I thank the elected officials at the state level who support law enforcement and have fought for all that’s just.
