Regarding the election for Mathews County Sheriff, my advice for everyone is to attend every forum that becomes available and listen to both candidates, not to those around you. Think for yourself.
If you have not been pleased with how a case was handled, please be aware that sometimes situations occur and decisions are made behind the scenes that you are not privy to. It doesn’t mean a deputy is doing a poor job.
Ask yourself:
Does the candidate represent all the people, not just Republicans or Democrats but everyone?
Does the candidate possess advanced degrees in law enforcement?
Is the candidate open and available to address concerns?
Has the candidate set goals for the county and shared them?
Does the candidate have a good track record?
Is the candidate confident in answering questions?
There have been quite a few high-profile crimes in the county. Most likely there will be others. You want a sheriff who will stand strong, protect the citizens and bring the criminals to justice.
