Letter: A threat to our Republic

Editor, Gazette-Journal:
Our republic has withstood many challenges since it became a sovereign nation in 1784. These have been both external and internal. The greatest internal threat came in the form of the Civil War. This was fought because Southern states wanted their independence so that they could continue slavery. They considered slavery necessary for their agrarian economy to survive. Fortunately, this failed and the Union was preserved.
Since that war, our greatest internal challenge occurred on Jan. 6, 2021 when President Trump, in his last days in office, created an insurrection designed to prevent the peaceful transition of government and restore him to power. Once again, a challenge failed and our Republic was saved. We were lucky.
Now he wants to be president again and he has millions of slavish followers who seem to support him no matter what outrageous things he does. Should he be allowed to do this? Of course not! Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution is ...
