The Constitution’s Article II, Section 1 Clause 1 discusses how a President and Vice President to the United States are elected. Originally, it was accomplished by state electors (Electoral College). The candidate with the most votes became president and second place became vice president. In this manner, George Washington was elected president and John Adams vice president. This process was changed by Amendment 12 of 1804. The change required electors to vote separately for President and Vice President. Until this 2024 election, the Electoral College vote was determined by popular vote and electors. The candidate with the most electoral votes was determined president, and since the vice president is on the same ticket, they are voted as one by the Electoral College.
