Last night (March 28), I attended the Mathews Board of Supervisors’ meeting to hear about the fate of the Hole in the Wall Restaurant located on Gwynn’s Island. After listening, the entire situation is worse than I thought.
First, the county should not be in the business of owning a restaurant and having to deal with tenants, leases, maintenance, etc. If anyone thought about the liability issue alone, you would wonder “Why is the county involved in this?,” especially when you realized the building has structural issues that will cost an estimated $307,000 to correct, and, if that wasn’t bad enough, the septic system needs major repairs or replacement that will cost possibly as much as the repairs to the building.
To add to the problem, the county may be forced to pay for sewage disposal by pumping to the tune of $40,000. The lease rent is so low it’s laughable, and one wonders why a previous county board ever signed such an agreement.
