The Virginia Department of Transportation began, as of Monday, to prohibit left turns from Route 3 (Windsor Road) to Route 14 eastbound in Mathews County.
Work is underway at that intersection to improve the westbound Route 3/14 bridge over Burke Mill Stream located at the Mathews and Gloucester line.
Until the project is completed Route 3 travelers heading to Mathews can choose to travel to Route 198 or turn right onto Route 14 eastbound and proceed to the Burkes Pond Road intersection to make a U-turn.
“Drivers should use the most convenient alternate route depending on their destination,” said a press release from VDOT.
The $5.5 million rehabilitation project began in July to replace the bridge deck, beams, railings, guardrails, and asphalt. The project will also improve drainage, environmental controls, and slopes near the 76-year-old structure.
Message boards and signs will be posted to alert drivers to the new restriction.
