Left turns from Route 3 (Windsor Road) onto Route 14 eastbound to Mathews are being prohibited by the Virginia Department of Transportation starting Monday, Sept. 9, because of the work that’s underway on the bridge over Burke Mill Stream at the county line.
Until the project is completed Route 3 travelers heading to Mathews can choose to travel to Route 198 or turn right onto Route 14 eastbound and proceed to the Burkes Pond Road intersection to make a U-turn.
“Drivers should use the most convenient alternate route depending on their destination,” said a press release from VDOT.
The $5.5 million rehabilitation project began in July to replace the bridge deck, beams, railings, guardrails, and asphalt. The project will also improve drainage, environmental controls, and slopes near the 76-year-old structure.
Message boards and signs will be posted to alert drivers to the new restriction.
