The Middle Peninsula Master Naturalist chapter will hold an evening dedicated to moths beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 26 at the north entrance of Beaverdam Park off Fary’s Mill Road in Gloucester.
The last full week of July is National Moth Week which celebrates the beauty, life cycles, and habitats of moths, a release stated. Moths come in a dazzling array of colors and patterns and are important pollinators and indicators of a healthy environment, a release said.
The July 26 program will begin with a nature walk guided by Elisabeth Wilkins, a biologist and Master Naturalist with the local chapter. At 8:30, a presentation on moths will be given by Dr. Shawn Dash, a biologist at Hampton University. After the presentation, attendees will be given the opportunity to observe moths attracted to the light and bait traps set out earlier, and Dash will be on hand to identify the moths. The data collected will be entered into a national database at a later date.
