Larry A. Johnson Sr., 81, of Hayes, Va., passed away on Friday, May 31, 2024, with his family by his bedside. Born in Carroll County, Va., in 1943, he later resided in Newport News, Va., where he was employed in the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. In 1972, he was employed as a trooper with the Virginia State Police and later was promoted to special agent and assigned to Hayes, where he served until his retirement in 1996. After retirement, he continued employment with the Department as an applicant investigator until June 2000. Larry always took special pride in being born in his grandmother’s two-room log cabin in Cana, Va. (Carroll County). Larry was preceded in death by his father, Arnold R. Johnson Sr. of Carroll County; mother, Evelyn Fay McFerrin Johnson of Heppner, Ore.; son, Larry A. Johnson Jr. (Gloucester, Va.); four brothers, William Snow (Salem, Ore.), Claude Snow (Spokane, Wash.), Richard R. Johnson Sr. (Newport News, Va.) and Arnold Ray Johnson Jr. (Roanoke, Va.). Larry is survived by his loving wife Judy of 62 years who meant more to him than she could ever know; daughter, Sharon L. Carleton (John, deceased); granddaughters, Afton Leigh and Nataleigh Page Thayer (Gloucester) whom he loved more than life itself; a wonderful and very special sister, Nancy G. Bolin (Gaffney, S.C.), and a special ex-son-in-law, Michael Thayer. At Larry’s request, all services will be private. In memory of our loved one, if desired, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Gloucester Animal Shelter or Bethany United Methodist Church, Gloucester Point.
