Gloucester High School beat Kecoughtan, 1-0, after 11 innings to win the Peninsula District Softball Tournament on May 22. Gloucester’s Makayla Jenkins and Kecoughtan’s Allyson Babinsack hooked up in a memorable pitcher’s duel, and Gloucester came out on top when Shelby Alto scored from second on a single by Macy Robbins to end the nearly three-hour game.
Jenkins and Babinsack each pitched a complete game that saw few scoring opportunities. Jenkins gave up five hits, struck out 16 and gave one intentional walk to Babinsack, who was equally masterful, striking out 17 and giving up only four hits.
The Dukes threatened in the fourth when Robbins singled with one out, stole second and went to third on an error. Babinsack intentionally walked Jenkins and then Morgan Haywood on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases. Devon Smith then grounded sharply to the third baseman for a force out at home, and Babinsack struck out the next batter.
