The Mathews High School JV volleyball team beat the visiting Essex Trojans in straight sets on Monday, by scores of 25-16 and 25-11.
The game was held as part of Mathews volleyball’s Dig Pink night, honoring those who died of cancer as well as those in the community who have battled or continue to battle the disease, between the JV and varsity games. A bake sale was also held, with proceeds going to fight breast cancer.
Essex started off the first set by serving but the Lady Blue Devils won the point. Carter Hayes was the first server for Mathews and she served an ace. Later on, Carter served two more aces along with Harmony Smith, with two, Delaney Boatman, with two, and Marley Brock, with one. Brock got the first kill for Mathews. Boatman got a setter’s dump and the crowd roared even more. Now that everyone was pumped up, Smith got back-to-back kills. Natalie Davis picked up a block as Mathews won, 25-16.
