The Lady Dukes defeated Peninsula Catholic, 11-1, in softball action at Gloucester High School on Monday. Gloucester scored four runs in the first inning on the way to improving to 8-0.
A two-run single from Alissa Upton was the big blow of the opening inning, bringing in Rebecca Jenkins and Alyssa Shackleford for the early 2-0 lead.
The Dukes added four more runs in the second inning when Shackleford hit an RBI sacrifice fly, Tori Brown added an RBI single and Upton hit a double to score Kaleigh Arnett and Nina Garland.
Gloucester scored two more runs in the third and Ashley Buffington added another run in the fifth with a ground ball that scored Haywood to make it 11-1. The Knights avoided the shutout with a run in the second inning.
Morgan Haywood (8-0) pitched her second no-hitter of the season with eight strikeouts and no walks. Offensively, she was supported by Upton’s single, double and four RBIs.
