The Gloucester varsity girls’ soccer team opened the 2012 season with a 4-1 win over host Lafayette in a non-district match on Tuesday. Mary Williams scored first for the Dukes as a result of good combination play with fellow forward Delaney Doyle. The Rams tied it with a corner kick conversion and the contest was notched 1-1 at the half.
Gloucester regained its aggressive style of play in the second half while shutting down the Lafayette offense. McKensie Fischer scored with a long, well-placed shot from the left flank to beat the Rams’ keeper to the back-side upper 90. Maegan Beck struck next with a driving shot just outside the 18 after a layoff assist by Williams.
Williams scored the last goal from just inside the 18. Cheyenne Hogge and Rachel Petersen shared keeper duties for the Dukes, combining for five saves. Cierra Griffith and Karsyn Wass anchored the field defense, closing out the Rams while creating attacking options for the Gloucester offense.
