The Gloucester High School varsity softball team is 4-1 in early season play and currently in second place in Peninsula District standings.
The Dukes pounded Hampton 19-0 on the Crabbers’ field on Saturday. Shelby Alto, Macy Robbins, Tori Brown and Makayla Jenkins each contributed three hits to the Gloucester win.
Jenkins pitched four innings, striking out seven batters and allowing only one hit, and smacked a fifth-inning grand slam. Gabby Zarichny and Morgan Haywood added two hits apiece for the Dukes, and Haywood pitched the fifth inning to finish the shutout.
Gloucester bounced back from a loss for a big 2-0 win over Kecoughtan on Friday. Jenkins pitched a one-hitter with nine strikeouts. Alto led off the game with a double and later scored on a passed ball for a quick 1-0 advantage. The Dukes upped the lead to 2-0 on a long solo home run by Jenkins in the fourth inning.
