The Gloucester High School varsity girls’ soccer team opened the 2013 season last week with a 1-2 performance in the Christina Garvey Memorial Soccer Tournament.
The Dukes met the York Falcons in the first round of the event March 12 and came up short, 4-1. York scored late in the first half for a 1-0 lead but Carrie Adams scored for Gloucester on a penalty kick from the 25-yard mark to even the score at 1-1 in the second half. The Falcons rallied late in the half for three goals and the win.
Mary Williams scored the lone goal of the match up with Grafton on March 13 to help the Dukes get by the Clippers, 1-0. The Dukes faced off with Peninsula District foe Menchville last Thursday. In a hard fought match by both teams, the Monarchs came out on top, 2-1. Williams scored for the Dukes to prevent a shutout.
