The Gloucester High School varsity softball team started the 2025 season with a win against the Kecoughtan Warriors, 9-7, at Stoney Run Athletic Complex, Newport News, on Tuesday afternoon.
Autumn Cookson led off for Gloucester with a home run. The Lady Dukes ended the first inning with a 3-0 lead as Hannah Horsley and Avery West both scored.
Gloucester advanced to an 8-0 lead in the third inning as Horsley and Tessa Carteret both had an RBI each and Kyndall Sales added a two-RBI single.
The Lady Dukes gave up two runs in the fifth inning, but scored another run on a Horsley RBI before the inning was over. Gloucester then gave up five runs in the seventh inning, but was able to hold Kecoughtan in the win.
Cookson, who is the team’s pitcher, achieved 10 strikeouts during the game and added two hits. Sales also had two hits and two RBIs, while Horsley contributed three RBIs.
Gloucester will travel to Hampton on Tuesday and will host Manor on Wednesday and Hampton next Thursday. All games...
